IPL knocked out of India; England could play host

The cricket board has bowled a googly. The Indian Premier League will be played outside India. Barely two weeks before the high profile tournament was to begin, South Africa and England are being considered possible venues.

The billion dollar baby that is the IPL is prepared to incur any costs to make sure the event goes ahead as per the original dates and original schedule of 59 games.

"We are not concerned whether we make a profit or loss, our issue is to make sure that all our fans and the lovers of cricket get to watch the finest level of cricket," says Lalit Modi, chairman & commissioner, IPL.

The team owners who will be most inconvenienced by the logistics were united in their support for the IPL's decision.

Actor Shah Rukh Khan, owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, said: "As team owners, we have decided to stick by each other and see this through because then the tournament does not stop. Of course we will miss the life and the buzz of India. But elections will fill up for that buzz. Next year we shall comeback.

"Elections are bigger and we have to respect the needs of the government. But we are from the entertainment field, BCCI is from sports so that is important that sports and enter go on as well. This is an attempt to resolve the problem and no to create one."

So, with 19 days to go for the tournament and a toss up between South Africa and England as the possible venues, England could have the edge because the 20-20 world cup starts immediately after the IPL gets over.
