The Indian Premier League (IPL) announced on Tuesday that the final of the 2009 tournament will be held in Mumbai. However, there seems to be a few issues yet to be resolved before the big day arrives.
Team Mumbai — the local IPL team — is yet to negotiate the terms and conditions to host the final at the Brabourne stadium.
The Cricket Club of India (CCI), which takes care of the Brabourne stadium, is unwilling to part with the club house which could prove to be a thorny issue in the run-up to the final. Team Mumbai have unofficially communicated with the CCI committee in this regard but the talks have failed.
Team Mumbai officials, it is now learnt, will head to the DY Patil stadium in New Mumbai in search for a venue that fits their requirement. Sources said that the senior management team of Team Mumbai will be visiting DY Patil Stadium on Wednesday to finalize the venue for all the seven matches which Team Mumbai will host at home.
"We have tried to communicate to them (CCI) several times, however there are issues regarding seat allocation. We have no choice but to try and initiate talks with DY Patil," sources said.
For the record, DY Patil had hosted the final and a couple of home matches of the tournament last year with great success. However, Team Mumbai sources say that the players prefer the Brabourne as it is located in South Mumbai, which would save them the hassle of long-distance travelling.
The Brabourne stadium has a total capacity of 18,000 and last hosted an international when Australia toured India for an ODI series and a T20 match. Now, with Wankhede stadium undergoing renovation, Brabourne stadium happens to be the only choice for IPL in South Mumbai. The IPL is yet to interfere in the communication taking place between the Team Mumbai and CCI.
