And his name sounds similar to Team Chennai and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Meet Team Chennai player Manpreet Singh Gony, MSG in short. Better known as Gony, the seamer knows perfectly well what he needs to do to be successful. Talking about the match against Royal Challengers, he says, “As the wicket was a little flat, I had to concentrate on my line and length rather than pace.”
Though disappointed at not getting a chance to perform in front of his home crowd, Gony knows he has to rise to the occasion: “Wherever the IPL is held, it is okay with me. I am a professional. But the craze is more intense in India. It is always a bonus to perform on one’s home turf.”
Being one of the most successful bowlers for Team Chennai last season, is he also aiming to scoop up maximum wickets in IPL 2? “It depends on how the tournament unfolds for me. Till now, it has been good,” says a confident Gony.
Elaborating on the wickets in SA, he says, “Wickets are bouncy here, so I have to pitch the ball up to make the batsman play.” Speaking about his captain, Mahi, Gony says, “He has confidence in his bowlers. He told us that it won’t matter even if we get hit for a few runs. He asked us to enjoy our bowling.”
And that is just what Gony is doing right now. The medium pacer, who has had problems with his parents in the recent past, says, “I wouldn’t like to discuss my personal matters. But nothing affects my performance on the field.”
Having got a call for national duty just after the IPL in 2008 and playing in the Asia Cup, Gony has his eyes set on a Team India berth. He says, “I’m working hard for an India call-up as the Twenty20 World Cup will begin in England just after IPL 2. And Venky Sir (Venkatesh Prasad), who is the bowling coach both for Chennai and Team India, has been guiding me.” A firm believer in destiny, Gony adds, “Luck is also an important factor.”
When he’s not sweating it out on the field, Gony loves to spend time with friends. Away from home and family, he says, “My wife may not be here with me, but I chat with her on the phone whenever I’m free.”
The Punjab player is also passionate about bikes, watches and mobile phones. “I love riding my bike,” he smiles. Not too much of a film buff, he confesses to an interest most men would shy away from — shopping! So, is he also shopping in SA? “Yes, it is continuing side by side!” he says with a chuckle.
Well, when you work hard, you gotta play harder!
